What is the Montessori Philosophy?
Montessori is an education philosophy developed by Italian physician Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. It is characterized by multi-age classrooms, specially designed learning materials, child-led learning, collaboration, the absence of grades and tests, and small group or individual instructions. What 3 principles do we use the most?
The 3 Montessori principles that we use the most are:
- Teach simply. I believe in teaching in a simple manner, not complicating things, and trying to get down to the basics!
- Value the process over the product. We are teaching them to LOVE learning, not to be good at taking a test. To ENJOY learning, not to “do it because we have to.” There is a huge difference.
- This is the hardest… But to teach them, as a manner of guiding them, not as a manner of controlling them. I do not want them to be controlled by me, I want them to understand and make their own decisions… as hard as that is.
Life skills and practical knowledge go hand in hand with all of these principles, and that is the type of skill that children need more of these days!! The Montessori philosophy inspired many of our life skills/practical skills products:
