Welcome to our new series, all about Homeschool Portfolios!
This is post #2 (and video #2! Scroll down to see that)
Homeschool Portfolio Series #2: Physical Portfolios
A physical portfolio. Why? Here are a few reasons that we love physical portfolios.
- If you need to turn in a portfolio to your district. This is a great way to show them physical copies of some work!
- If you would like to keep SOME but not ALL of your kids’ work, drawings (let’s be honest, there are a lot of those right??).
- If you are a kinesthetic family- and like to see AND feel the progress of the past.
A physical portfolio. How?
We use a simple folder, with some FREE portfolio printables for our portfolio.
- First, choose your folder. (We use 1.5in folders, that have a plastic cover so you can add paper)
- Next, print the portfolio printables!
- Then, organize them inside (you can see how we do that in the video), and decide what you want to keep!
- At the end of each week, month, unit, or workbook- take a few sample pages, hole punch, and add to the physical portfolio! (Take pics of the rest for your digital portfolio- and then THROW THEM AWAY! So freeing.)
Here are some videos of our physical portfolios:
A physical portfolio. What do we save?
We have a few different sections in our digital portfolio.
- Beginning and End of the year About Me pages, and Writing Samples.
- Math, Language Arts, Science, History, Tea Time, Artwork, and Extras.
- Our planned schedules.
I take pictures of the pages we do everyday, or my kids in the middle of an activity. Sometimes I take extra pictures and videos, sometimes just the bare minimum. I then upload those as attachments to Trello for our DIGITAL portfolios.
As far as consumable items, I save usually the beginning, middle, and end of their copywork to show progress. I save fun things like flipbooks, some artwork I really love, and other samples of things like history journal pages, or a math worksheet they are really proud of!
This way, the portfolio isn’t too full, we keep just enough, and we don’t have a lot of clutter!
